Summary
When he presses the button on the doorbell, he hears the digitally-produced ding-dong echo from inside. There is a tiny box halfway up the adjacent wall that immediately beeps and emits Shane’s voice.
“Hey, you can just leave it on the step, thanks.”
Ilya presses his nose into the digital doorbell, which he knows to also contain a camera, and says, “Shane.”
A pause.
“What the fuck.”
A brief cacophony of noise that Ilya can hear even from outside the house. The multiple successive thumps of something falling, Shane swearing loudly and the sound of what can only be a hockey game being paused on the television.
He opens the door to reveal that he is nap-rumpled, wearing two pairs of socks and carrying a child in his arms. The only really surprising part is that the socks don’t match, though the child is interesting.Ilya takes an impromptu trip to Montreal. There are unforeseen consequences.

The Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity house—affectionately known to brothers and friends as Deke—was a boring three-story reddish brown brick building, narrow but deep, that would be nearly indistinguishable from Delta Tau Delta next door were it not for the lettered flags hanging out front. Shane jogged up the eight stairs onto the porch and let himself inside. As a senior and elected President of the Tau Alpha chapter of Deke, Shane had been granted his own room in the far corner of the top floor, furthest away from the front door and main living spaces.
He climbed the stairs two at a time to the third floor, ignoring the way his thighs screamed in protest at the repeated overexertion they’d been subjected to in the last eight hours. You’d think he’d have gotten used to this particular combination of hockey and fucking by now, but apparently that was not the case.OR, Shane Hollander, intramural hockey captain, fraternity president, and bad liar extraordinaire, takes on his senior year of university. They walked in silence until they reached the wine aisle and Shane let out an audible groan before he could stop himself. It was a big mess, big enough to see from twenty feet away. A broken bottle was lying on the floor, steeped in a pool of pungent red wine, and shattered glass was scattered even further than the huge puddle. There were chips of glass throughout the aisle, right where anyone could step on them. Hell, he nearly stepped on one.
“Sorry.” The man repeated, sheepishly, “It was accident.”
Shane was not in the mood to deal with this right now.
